Department of Agriculture Crop Production and Rural Environment

Postdoctoral Research

The Department of Agriculture Plant Production and Rural Environment provides scientists with a doctoral degree (PhD) the opportunity to conduct postdoctoral research in areas that fall within the research interests of the Department. The main objectives of the postdoctoral research are the following:

  • The attraction and support of scientists with a PhD, to contribute to the progress of science, research, and its applications.
  • The extension of the results of the doctoral dissertations of the researchers to new scientific directions and research fields of interest to the Department.

Postdoctoral research approval procedure

The Department throughout the year accepts applications from researchers to conduct postdoctoral research.

Applicants must be holders of a PhD from a Greek university or from a foreign institution recognized by D.O.A.T.A.P – Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Center (Hellenic NARIC), in a subject related to that of the proposed Postdoctoral Research.

The applications with the necessary supporting documents are submitted to the secretary of the Department. The application must be accompanied by the acceptance of the suggested supervisor. The secretariat after conducting the necessary formal check, forwards the applications to the Assembly of the Department.

The Assembly of the Department:

  1. a) appoints a three-member committee consisting of faculty members of the Department to evaluate the application. Also, the three-member committee examines the relevance of the research proposal to the academic subjects treated by the Department and the Laboratory in which the research will be conducted and submit its documented proposal to the Assembly of the Department.
  2. b) takes the decision to approve or not the application.

Registration of postdoctoral researchers

The Secretariat of the Department registers the postdoctoral researchers. To renew the postdoctoral researcher status, an annual progress report is required, which the candidate submits for approval to the Assembly of the Department.

Duration of postdoctoral research

The duration of the postdoctoral research cannot be less than 12 months from the date of the acceptance and approval by the Assembly of the Department.

Main benefits of postdoctoral researchers

  1. During their research researchers may use the title “Postdoctoral Researcher” of the Department of Agriculture Crop Production and Rural Environment of the University of Thessaly.
  2. Postdoctoral researchers have access to a) the laboratories of the Department and their respective equipment and b) the libraries of the University with the right to borrow.

Main obligations of postdoctoral researchers

  • Postdoctoral researchers must prepare, in collaboration with the supervisor, and submit to the Assembly of the Department, a annual progress report of their postdoctoral research.
  • Postdoctoral researchers are required to indicate the Department of Agriculture Crop Production and Rural Environment in which they conduct the research in each of their publications that will arise as a result of their postdoctoral research.
  • Postdoctoral researchers must comply with the Internal Regulations of the University of Thessaly.
